The Power of Asking Better Questions

“It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question.”
― Eugene Ionesco

When it comes to alcohol, many of us start with questions like: “Am I an alcoholic?” or “Do I have a problem?” These questions loom large, full of fear and judgment.

I know, because I was once there too. Private-browser-googling my way through endless articles about alcohol, secretly hoping I didn’t fit into any of the boxes they described.

It was exhausting. I kept trying to decide if things were bad enough that I needed to make a change.

But looking back, I realize now—I was asking the wrong questions. And if you’re stuck in that same loop, you might be too.

Fear-Based Questions Keep Us Stuck

The truth? I didn’t really want answers to those questions. They pointed in a direction I didn’t really want to go. 🚫 And deep down, I was mostly looking for reasons why I couldn’t possibly fit the mold.

I was searching for excuses—any excuse—to keep kicking the can down the road and leaving that “problem” for another day.

These questions—"Am I an alcoholic?" or "Do I have a problem?"—were rooted in fear. Fear of losing what I thought was the one thing that made me happy. Fear of a life without alcohol. But what I didn’t realize was that these questions were keeping me stuck in the same cycle, over and over.

Shifting the Focus: Asking Better Questions

It wasn’t until I started asking better questions that things began to change for me. Instead of fear-driven questions, I turned toward curiosity and possibility. That was the monumental shift.

Instead of asking, “Are things bad enough that I have to change?”…

I started asking, “Are things good enough not to?”

That one question opened up a whole new world of possibility for me. It wasn’t about labeling myself or fitting into a rigid category. It was about genuinely wondering what life could look like on the other side.

Better Questions, Better Motivation

Better questions are inspiring. They tap into something deeper than fear—they connect to your curiosity, to your desire for growth and expansion.

Here are a few of the better questions that helped me, and might just help you too:

❓ What if drinking is holding you back?
❓ What if booze isn’t all it’s cracked up to be?
❓ What if it doesn’t matter if you “have a problem” or not?
❓ What if there’s a way to drink less without feeling deprived?
❓ What if a beautiful life of joy and purpose is waiting for youuuu?

Suddenly, I wasn’t approaching my drinking habits with anxiety. I was approaching them with curiosity. That curiosity fueled a spark of hope—and over time, it built into a fire of motivation that helped me take action.

What If You Started Today?

The simple act of asking better questions can be life-changing. It allows you to see past fear and into possibility. It removes the pressure of labeling yourself or meeting some external standard of "bad enough." Instead, it’s about exploring what could be.

So, what if you are ready for a change? What if there’s a whole new world of clarity, energy, and joy just waiting for you to discover it?
