Struggling With Dry January? Here’s Why (and How to Keep Going)

The plot twist no one tells you about change?

Feeling a little wobbly doesn’t mean it’s *not* working…

When things start to get hard, this is often the moment when something new is actually starting to settle in…

(even though it might not feel particularly inspiring.)

😅

You might not know this, but Day 19 is the most common day people abandon a new habit or goal.

If you’re doing Dry January, that’s today  😬, but honestly, this applies anytime you’re trying to change something…

Here’s what usually happens:

Week 1: Energy is high. Motivation is strong. 🏋️‍♂️

Week 2: You’re still going… maybe with a little less steam. 🚶‍♀️… . .

Week 3: Whoo boy. This is when sh*t starts to get real. 🫠

After a few weeks, thoughts start creeping in like:
“Ugh… is this my life now?”
“Why did I even start this?”

Momentum dips.
You start missing how things used to be.

And here’s why:

Doing anything new takes a LOT of mental energy. 🧠
Using willpower to muscle your way through change is exhausting.

So if you’re struggling right now, please hear this:

You’re not alone.
And nothing is wrong with you.

It doesn’t mean you’re weak or broken… it usually just means you need some new tools.

🧰

Our behavior is driven by our thoughts and feelings. 👈
So, when you focus on learning something new, you start feeling differently, and then behavior change becomes far more sustainable!

If you’re doing Dry January and it feels wobbly right now, let me offer this:

It doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.
Not all goals are pass/fail.

If you’ve had a few drinks [or you’re thinking about giving up soon] what if you treated this month like an experiment instead? 🤓

Something you can hold more loosely.

Think of it like running a race.

If you trip and fall, you don’t walk all the way back to the starting line, do you?

No.

You pause.
You catch your breath.
And you keep going.

Maybe your goal this month isn’t perfection… maybe it’s a direction. A North Star you’re moving toward.

From that perspective, any step in that direction counts.

Whether you’re not drinking this month… or whether you’re not even entertaining that idea at all 😉 …

Just keep going, my friend.
You’ve got this. 🤍

If Dry January feels like too much, but “doing nothing” doesn’t feel right either, there is another option.
