I’m not an alcoholic… and neither are you.
Here’s the thing.
The term alcoholic is outdated.
It comes with a sh*tload of stigma.
And it doesn’t resonate with many of us.
Sure, I felt like I was drinking more than I wanted, but the term “alcoholic” didn’t fit… plus, the idea of giving up alcohol “forever” sounded really severe. 😬
In fact, that label actually KEPT ME DRINKING for years because I felt like there were only 2 options:
➡️ Keep drinking
➡️ Or accept a life of deprivation and stigma
😒 Uh. Nothankyou?
But, the truth is that there are a whole bunch of options out there!!
The BINARY of “normal drinker” vs “problem drinker” is just another construct on a lonnnng list of constructs (…don’t get me started 🙄) and you DON’T HAVE TO ACCEPT IT.
The healthcare industry doesn’t even use those terms. The DSM refers to Alcohol Use Disorder—or AUD—which reflects a wide spectrum of use.
If you’re drinking more than you want to…
Or even if you’re just drinking more than you used to…
You are probably somewhere in the middle of this spectrum like I was.
And it doesn’t mean that you’ve done something wrong. Or that you’re broken or different somehow.
☣️ Alcohol is addictive to all humans who drink it. ☣️
Chemically. Biologically. Addictive.
Asking people to take on the identity of “alcoholic” places all of the BLAME on the drinker…
And it absolves the ENTIRE INDUSTRY who actually PRODUCE this substance (and spend billions on marketing year-over-year without adequately educating the public on the risks). 🤬
➡️ I didn’t know that alcohol causes stress and *worsens* anxiety.
➡️ I didn’t know that it’s a Class 1 carcinogen…
*ahem*
