How to Thanksgiving Alcohol-Free (Without White-Knuckling-It!)

Let’s be honest, y’all: Attempting your first [or third] Thanksgiving alcohol-free can feel really daunting.

For many of my clients, the thought of navigating the holidays without booze brings up legit anxiety…

If that’s you, take a breath.
Know that you don’t need to do this perfectly…

You just need a plan.
👇

Start with your mindset.

First of all: you’re allowed to be proud of yourself for even considering doing Thanksgiving alcohol-free. In a culture that equates booze with celebration, choosing differently is totally badass.

Some might even say revolutionary. 😏

Try curiosity instead of pressure. This doesn’t have to be the “best” Thanksgiving of your life… it just has to be different. Let it be an experiment! Ask yourself questions like: “What new things might I notice? What might surprise me?”

Make a firm, but achievable decision in your mind. No need to think about “the rest of your life” or even a single day beyond turkey day. Consider something like: “Just for this meal, just for tonight, I’m choosing me.”

(…and note that anything that sounds like “we’ll see how it goes” is essentially a “yes” when it comes to pouring a drink.)

Have a gentle game plan.

Think about what you actually want to drink. Sparkling water with cranberry and lime? A fun NA wine or kombucha? Bring something you’re excited about so you don’t feel deprived.

If someone asks why you’re not drinking, keep it simple:
– “Oh, I’m just taking a break.”
– “I’ve got an early class in the morning.”
– “I feel better this way.”

You don’t owe anyone a TED Talk.

Eat before you go.
Drink water.
Steady your blood sugar with protein-rich snacks.

^ This alone lowers cravings more than people realize.

Stay connected to the good stuff.

Focus on what you’re gaining by not drinking: presence of mind, clearer conversations, real laughter, actually remembering the whole night, sleeping like a baby, no spiral of shame the next day.

Give yourself a tiny “mission” if it helps. Learn one new thing about someone. Have a real conversation. Step outside for fresh air. …aim for progress, not perfection.

Have an exit plan.

You’re allowed to leave early! You’re allowed to protect your peace.

Plan a little reward: cozy pajamas, a favorite dessert, a long bath, a quiet walk or gentle yoga class the next day. Your brain needs something to look forward to.

And after it’s over, check in with yourself:
What surprised you? What was easier than expected? What are you proud of? (…you should be proud of yourself just for trying!)

And that’s it!

That’s how new patterns are built.
…gently, honestly, one holiday at a time.
