How our habits are formed.
We think of our thoughts as abstract… intangible.
But the truth is that our thoughts, with enough repetition, become actual things.
Physical structures called Dendrites are created in our brains – like the branches of a tree reaching towards each other – and these structures form the literal neural PATHWAYS that our brain cells use to communicate with each other.
Each time a thought travels along one of these pathways, it strengthens the connection and makes the travel time faster and faster.
Like walking a path in the woods – the first time you have to clear trees and leaves, but over time, after use, that path becomes well-worn and much easier to travel.
This is how we form habits and routines.
We do something—or think something—enough times, that our brains don’t hesitate anymore.
And our behaviors become automatic.
For me, drinking wine with dinner every night became an automatic.
And, when I tried NOT to follow this automatic, it was a really difficult decision.
Learning the science of how my mind was working in the background, helped me not only understand what I was experiencing, but it allowed me to put down the JUDGEMENT of myself…
The science just explained why using willpower was SO HARD, and it outlined a way forward that—with gradual changes and self-compassion and PRACTICE, I was able to EASILY change my drinking.
