Cravings, cookies, and a complete shift.
Newsletter | April 2024
Well, my friends... this is why I refer to this newsletter as semi-monthly-ish.
It seems I’ve entirely missed the month of March, but perhaps one less email was a gift? (You're welcome. )
So, what happened?
They say that time moves faster with age, which I really have been feeling lately. ...AND! I’ve also been head-down in full-on course-creation-mode.
Some exciting news on this soon!
If you haven’t already pre-registered for my spring course, there’s still time! You won't miss my special offer if you add your name to the waitlist THIS WEEK.
Allow me to share a quick story:
You may already know about my love of popcorn—and how it helped me get through the early days of “cravings” when I was cutting back on my drinking.*
*It’s a good idea to have a replacement for booze in the early days—when we’re so used to reaching for a drink to “feel better” or “feel different” or “UGH! What a crappy day!? I need a DRINK.” sort of days… and popcorn was one of my go-to’s.
Eventually, you learn to shift away from those quick fixes (like popcorn, sugar, and technology) and start to build a toolkit of healthier ways to care for yourself and balance your mood.
Related: If you missed my newsletter on Switches & Seeds, you can read that here. In this article, I discuss the value of having a combo of quick fixes and longer-term strategies.
I’m not gonna lie—this process to shift takes time. And it helps immensely to have support and guidance.
This is something I cover in-depth in my new course. (Not bragging.) (…ok maybe a little.)
ANYWAY. In my life now, I still lean on quick-fix “switches” (like popcorn) every now and again—as we all do—and I wanted to share an interesting update:
Just yesterday, after a stressful series of events involving taxes, technology, and a potential security breach (don’t ask )—when I knew I’d hit my limit and shoved my chair away from my desk—I found myself in the kitchen.
Staring at a bag of chocolate chips gathering dust, I decided to make cookies. Low-sugar, gluten-free, oatmeal-chocolate-chip with flax.
Why am I telling you this?
Because it struck me: I’ve got SUCH a different collection of tools in my life now (really, in my mind) that I hardly ever think of booze.
…isn’t that wild?
I used to think of alcohol all the time. ...like, DAILY!
The moment anything went wrong—or even right! I’d think “Welp. TIME FOR A DRINK!”
And it’s just… SO DIFFERENT NOW!
Yes, I still wanted something to distract me from my irritation. I still went looking for something to “feel better now”… but...
The thought of reaching for a drink didn’t even occur to me!
I wanted to share that with you.
Sure, it’s challenging in the beginning of this journey… when you feel like alcohol is the duct-tape holding everything together… when you can’t imagine life without it…
But, holy cow. It gets easier.
It gets way easier.
And it feels so freeing on the other side.
Now, other than popcorn and baking, I’ve got a whole battery of tools! I've got self-care and mindfulness and movement... all sorts of things.
I'd love to help you get there, too.
